Bacterioplankton abundance, biomass and production in a Brazilian coastal lagoon and in two German lakes Anais da ABC (AABC)

The bacterioplanktonic abundance, biomass, and production within a tropical lagoon (Cabiúnas, Brazil) and two temperate lakes (Stechlin and Dagow, Germany) were compared. Bacterial abundance and production were significantly different among the three water bodies. The lowest bacterial production ( 0.8mug C l-1 d-1) was observed in the tropical Cabiúnas Lagoon despite its higher mean temperature and dissolved organic carbon concentration. Highest bacterioplankton abundance ( 2.6 x 10(9) cells l-1) and production ( 68.5mug C l-1 d-1) were measured in eutrophic Lake Dagow. Distribution of prokaryotic organisms in a tropical estuary influenced by sugar cane agriculture in northeast Brazil BJM

In a joint Brazilian-German case study, distribution patterns of microorganisms were compared with environmental variables in the tropical coastal Manguaba lagoon in northeast Brazil, which is situated downstream of several sugar cane processing plants . 16S rDNA and 16S rRNA single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) gene fingerprinting were used to follow the composition and distribution of microorganisms throughout the salinity gradient of the lagoon. A model of bioenergetics of the black pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) was built to simulate growth, reproduction and spawning in suspended culture at field sites in Takapoto lagoon (French Polynesia). This model was based on allometric scaling of physiological functions and scope for growth (SFG) calculations. Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, at nine culture sites of French Polynesia: synthesis of several sampling designs conducted between 1994 and 1999 ArchiMer

Between 1994 and 1999, several sampling designs were used to measure the growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi at different sites in French Polynesia. Using a common statistical method, growth data were analysed for nine sites and showed significant geographic variability. Parameters of the Von Bertalanffy model, fitted on the nine data sets, ranged from 147 to 186.5 mm for the H-infinity parameter and from 0.42 to 0.58 year(-1) for the k parameter. Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi, was studied for an annual cycle, from March 1997 to April 1998, in the lagoon of Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia). Growth in shell and in tissue were measured every 15 days on three successive age groups of cultivated pearl oysters. At the same time, hydrobiological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, suspended particulate matter), known to have influence on bivalve growth, were followed each week during culture. In situ suspension feeding behaviour of the pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera: combined effects of body size and weather-related seston composition ArchiMer

In situ clearance rate (CR) and biodeposition of the black pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, were followed during several field experiments from 1996 to 1998 in the lagoon of Takapoto. Serial measurements of total particulate matter (TPM, mg l(-1)), particulate inorganic matter (PLM, mg l(-1)), and particulate organic matter (POM, mg l(-1)) were related to meteorological conditions, especially wind speed. As a general case, POM and PLM increased with wind speed. Nevertheless, PLM increased faster than POM so that the organic content (OC, %) of the TPM decreased progressively when wind speed increased. Oxygen demand, carbon dioxide release and total alkalinity shift were calculated from changes in oxygen, pH and total alkalinity produced by bottom dark incubations at the water-sediment interface of the 3 bottom types identified in a southwest lagoon in New Caledonia.
